Our Proposal Story

A year ago today, I woke up and was getting ready as usual. I had flown into Richmond the night before and Jett picked me up… after making me wait at the airport for 20 minutes because he was late.

I was livid. I got into his truck and remember him telling me that we had to get up early in the morning to go to breakfast with his friends. I had flown in at 11pm and I did not want to wake up early to hang out with his friends.

We were arguing and finally, Jett blurted out that we were actually going to breakfast with my dad and it was supposed to be a birthday surprise for me. That shut me up real quick. I felt like such a jerk, which I was.

So, we’re in the hotel, getting dressed and Jett asked me which shirt to wear. I was seriously so dense. It was a little unusual for him to ask me about his outfit, but I didn’t think anything of it.

We go to breakfast with my dad and it’s so nice. This trip was to celebrate my birthday and Valentine’s Day so I hadn’t really planned to see my dad but I felt so lucky that Jett arranged this and my dad made the drive to spend a few hours with me.

After breakfast, Jett and I headed down to Norfolk. The sports management program at my alma mater was hosting an alumni night at a Men’s basketball game and I hadn’t been back to school in a while so we planned to spend the night in Norfolk.

Jett had asked me if I wanted to take Kahlua on a walk along Waterside before going to the game and I’m never one to turn down a walk. We’re walking along, the sun is setting. It’s gorgeous. Also, I’m wearing a really cute outfit so we stop and I ask Jett to take my picture.

Then it happens. I see my little, blonde best friend walking like 20 feet away. I’m screaming her name, I know it’s her and she just keeps walking away from me. Like what the heck is going on here?

Suddenly, Jett gets down on one knee… And says NOTHING. Seriously, he doesn’t say anything for at least a solid minute. Finally, he pulls out a ring box… with an engagement ring AND a wedding band. Now, I’m stunned. Who buys a whole set and leaves the second ring in the box? Eventually, he squeaks out, “Anastasia, will you marry me?” and I say yes, of course!

Then I look up and realized Katie had been taking pictures of the whole thing! Had I not been so self-absorbed asking Jett to take pictures of me I wouldn’t have seen Katie and Jett would have been able to work into the proposal versus dropping down to a knee to save the situation.

It’s such a funny story and not exactly picture-perfect like you might think but I love it. Jett did an amazing job picking the location, timing and making sure Katie was there. Apparently, he had tried to meet with my dad earlier to ask his permission and my dad had car trouble so part of our breakfast that day was to ask my dad’s permission in person.

What was your proposal like? Did you know it was coming or were you completely oblivious and surprised like me?
